- Hampden Meadows School is pleased to continue our “Enrich Your Mind” extended day programs for the 2011 – 2012 school year. The programs have been designed to meet the needs and address the interests of our students. We have two - eight week sessions. The Fall session will begin the week of October 17th. (The spring session will start up in February.) Assuming there are no school cancellations or instructor cancellations, classes will continue for eight consecutive weeks.
- All tuition received is designed to cover all operating costs for this program, such as instructors, equipment, and materials. We have done our best to keep the program affordable for all families. Limited scholarships are available for those who may have difficulty paying for the cost of the program. - If your child is not going to attend his/her class on a certain day, you must notify the office with a written note or phone call (401-247-3166). If your child’s form of transportation is going to be different than what was listed on the registration form, a written note is required!
- Please remind your child that they are coming to the Enrichment class to learn and have fun. They are expected to be respectful to the instructor, fellow students, and classroom materials. If behavior problems are continually addressed, your child will be dropped from the Enrichment Program without a refund.
- There will be no refunds on any FALL programs after Friday, October 28, 2011.
- Morning dismissal from Enrichment courses will take place promptly at 8:30 to the playground.
- Afternoon dismissal from Enrichment courses will take place promptly at 4:30. Pick-up, walking, or late bus are the dismissal options. ALL STUDENTS BEING PICKED UP MUST BE SIGNED OUT BY AN ADULT IN THE MAIN FOYER.
- A late bus will be provided and will drop your child at their home address.
- In the event a parent or designated adult does not pick up a child/children by 4:40pm, the following steps will be taken by the program coordinator.
o If your child is still in our care after 4:40 P.M., you will be charged $10 for each fifteen minute period or part thereof until you arrive.
o At 4:55 P.M. the program coordinator will attempt to reach the parent, designated adult or emergency contact person by telephone.
o If someone cannot be reached and no one has come for the child, the program coordinator will drive the child to the Barrington Police Station. The child will remain at the police station until picked up by a parent or designated adult.

Monday Mornings (7:30-8:30)
Future Millionaires
Calling all future millionaires! Join Mr. Greg Voigt, a Vice President with Merrill Lynch Client Group, based in Providence, for an 8 hour session course on what investing is all about. Learn about how and why companies offer shares of ownership to the public; and how you, as a member of that public, can determine exactly which companies’ shares of ownership might be best for you to own. Learn how money is made (and lost) through the stock market which auctions all those shares of ownership in large amounts each and every day. Learn how to buy, sell, and collect a group of stocks and how to monitor that group‘s performance. The course will end with a stock-picking contest and prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Mad Science: Crazy Chemworks (MONDAY)
This action packed Mad Science After School Program explores the chemistry of everyday life! Students will learn and apply the concepts, tools, and techniques of real chemists with spectacular hands-on activities, stunning demonstrations, and inquiry-based discussions. Crazy Chemworks serves as the perfect introduction to elementary chemistry!
Classes: Lab Works, Jr. Reactors, pH pHactor, Dry Ice Capades, Super Sticky Stuff, Glow Show, Slime Time. Chem in a Flash

A second Mad Science class will possibly open on Wednesday morning- please DO NOT re-register your child if you prefer this day. A notice will be going home so you can choose.
Spanish
Join this class for a fun, lively introduction to Spanish. Through music, fun activities and games as well as typical workbook pages, students will learn many useful Spanish words and phrases. Students will also be introduced to some of the cultures of Spanish speaking countries. After 8 weeks, students will be able to recognize, understand and practice many highly used words and expressions. So join us and impress your friends and family with your newly learned skills!

Tuesday Mornings (7:30-8:30)
Painting, Palettes and Projects
This art class will be an experimental class in the use of paint and painting techniques. Painting without a brush, splatter technique, resist and impasto painting will be covered as well as traditional paint on canvas. It is intended to be a fun, hands-on experimental class of working with a variety of paints and surface materials. Using the color wheel, students will explore color combinations and theory. The focus will be on the media with objective and non-objective art included.

Knitting Tuesday (there is also a Knitting Wednesday)
Interested in learning a life long skill? Join HMS parent Nancy Martin to learn how to develop your knitting skills. Learn to knit while creating fun projects like wrist warmers, hat and/or a scarf. This is also for students who know how to or have taken knitting with Mrs. Martin and are ready to learn more skills, such as using the purl stitch, knitting in the round to make a new and challenging project. If you are just a beginner or an experienced knitter, please don’t hesitate to join there is something for everyone!

Chance to Dance (7:45-8:30a.m.)
This is a 23 week program and does not follow the same schedule as the other after school programs!)
Chance to Dance is an exciting state-wide program that meets once a week before school and gives Rhode Island school children the chance to experience the arts by participating in a full scale dance production held at Providence Performing Arts Center in May 2012. Weekly dance classes are run by a professional dance instructor and musician. If you are creative, energetic, and you love to move your feet, then don’t miss your Chance to Dance!
*This program runs on a separate schedule as it extends throughout the school year. A separate schedule will be forth coming. Classes also do not follow the regular extended day time. Instead, classes run from 7:45am – 8:30am.

Lego ROBOTICS
Become a Middle School student early. Join Barrington Middle School teacher, Mr. Monuteaux in building robots that can follow your every command!

Creature Creations
Members of Providence's BIG NAZ0 LAB have designed, constructed and animated original characters for countless stage productions, parades, TV projects, and family extravaganzas throughout the US and overseas. Students in the BIG NAZ0 "Creature-Creation" workshop will be exposed to innovative drawing exercises and various 3-D fabrication techniques that combine foam, cardboard, tempra paint and a variety of materials to create unusual and fantastic creature-heads for use in parades, carnivals or just startling the general public!

Scrapbooking
Tuesday afternoons will be full of creativity as we work on scrapbook pages. In this course students will create pages of their favorite memories. We will create layouts using an array of techniques and materials (including tearing, journaling, borders, ribbons, punches, and so much more!) Students can bring their favorite photos and make different pages that can be put into a book. Additionally, we will devote a class to card making, using some of the techniques taught. Come scrap with us!

Knitting Wednesday (there is also a Knitting Tuesday)

Yoga
Have you heard the buzz about the benefits of kids yoga? Yoga is a fun and dynamic system that helps kids develop body awareness, strength, flexibility, coordination, confidence and concentration. It is a classic form of exercise that encourages kids to stay healthy, inside and out. In this class each student will learn age appropriate yoga postures suited to his or her individual needs. Partner yoga and other cooperative yoga games are used to inspire positive peer interactions. Breathing and visualization exercises teach kids to focus and relax. This class is the perfect way to begin a school day!

Cartooning
Children will learn to draw their own cartoons using basic shapes. These will be transferred to acetate and painted. The acetate film can then be placed on different backgrounds to illustrate a story.

Pillow Making
Put your imagination and creativity to work in this class. Learn how to make a no-sew personalized pillow and a hand sewn pillow out of a favorite t-shirt from home.

Chess Instruction and Play
Have you ever wanted to learn how to play chess? For beginners, this class will teach you the basics of chess as well as strategies to have fun and win. For those who have a solid foundation in chess and are ready for the opportunity to learn even more strategies, test your wit against some of the best HMS students. With the small class size, your chess coach will have the ability to work one-on-one with you each class to help you to improve your skills.

Kids-n-Motion
Kids-n-Motion is a morning Children Fitness class filled with lots of physical activities to get your child moving around before the start of the day. Activities include: Fun Fitness Games, Relay Races, Parachute Play, Hula Hoops, Jump Ropes, Kids' Fitness workouts with weights and bands, Stretching and Flexibility movements, Cooperation Activities, Music, Cardio moves and lots, lots more...
