Dear Families,
Last week, all 5th grade students had the opportunity to experience an immersive, hands-on learning STEAM course. For five days, students engaged in a kinetic sculpture program based on curriculum from i2learning, an organization that works with schools to turn their classrooms into learning labs. The course consisted of 20-25 hours of project-based curriculum that integrated all of the regular subject areas.

In this course, students were introduced to key concepts and skills of kinetic sculpture, including balance, gearing, energy sources and design thinking. Students engineered automata, constructed a marble run and built mobiles. Each day, they used the principles they learned as the basis for their own creations, culminating in a large-scale, kinetic sculpture at the end of the week.

IF YOU ARE THE PARENT OF A 5TH GRADER… you are in luck. You will have the opportunity to view your child’s sculpture at the BEF Student Showcase on December 9 from 2:30-4pm at Barrington High School (see attached flyer).

The Student Showcase provides an opportunity for your child to present his or her work to families and the Barrington community. Please encourage your child to become involved. Students have worked hard and will be proud to share their new knowledge and their final sculptures.

Dear Families,
Thanks to a generous grant from Barrington Education Foundation, all 5th grade students will experience an immersive, hands-on learning STEAM course during the week of October 23. For five days, students will engage in a kinetic sculpture program based on curriculum from i2learning, an organization that works with schools to turn their classrooms into learning labs. The course consists of 20-25 hours of hands-on, project-based curriculum that integrates all of the regular subject areas.

In this course, students will be introduced to key concepts and skills of kinetic sculpture, including balance, gearing, energy sources and design-oriented thinking. Course highlights include engineering automata, constructing a marble run and building mobiles. Students will use the work of Alexander Calder, George Rhodes, Anne Lilly and Arthur Ganson as examples of various forms of moving sculpture. Each day, they use the principles they learn as the basis for their own creations, and at the end of the week they’ll bring together their complete array of new skills to create a large-scale, chain-reaction-type work of art.
Please be sure to ask your child about what s/he is learning each day.

MID-WEEK Update!

i2 Learning has partnered with over 20 of the world’s leading STEM organizations, including MIT, Stanford, MathWorks, and the American Museum of Natural History, to develop their hands-on courses.

Please save Saturday, December 9 from 2:30pm – 4pm  to view the students’  creations at BEF’s Extraordinary Teaching and Learning Student Showcase.

Thank you, BEF, for this exciting learning opportunity!

IMPORTANT: There will be photo and video documenting at this event. Barrington Education Foundation would like to use and publish pictures and videos in print and/or electronically for purposes consistent with its mission, including publicity, website content, and the Student Showcase on December 9, 2017. If you do not want your child photographed or videotaped in this way, please contact BEF at barredfdn@gmail.com.

If you are dropping off your child in the morning, the front circle is the only location that this should be done.  Please do not go to a local Cul-De-Sac, a side street or even Kent Street to do so.  We want to keep all children safe.  Additionally, the first time you get the chance to stop your car is the location your child should get out and walk down the sidewalk to the front door.  Please do not do door to door drop off, it holds the lines up allthe way to Massasoit Ave.  There is also no passing in the car line.  Please wait to exit.  Children are crossing at the crosswalk in front of the school to enter the building.  The sun is at it's peak in front of the building, you can not easily see the children being crossed.

CHILDREN ARE ALLOWED TO BE DROPPED OFF AS EARLY AS 8:15, no EARLIER PLEASE.
Supervision begins at 8:15.
