June 10, 2020

5:45 PM

Good Afternoon,

Today the Barrington Administration received a brief by the Rhode Island Commissioner of Education, Angelica Infante Green, and her Deputy, Ana Reily. The debrief was followed by Governor Raimondo’s Press Conference with Commissioner Infante Green and Dr. Alexander Scott. We want to take this opportunity to provide you with the most up to date information and to provide you with an avenue to submit questions. While we may not yet have the information that you are seeking, we will use your questions to frame our work moving forward on the Superintendent’s Reentry Task Force. This task force includes all central office administrators, building administrators, facilities, union representatives, athletics and activities, special education, curriculum and instruction, school committee representatives, and health representatives. During the course of the next few weeks, we will provide information on sub-groups and focus groups that will work to carry out the planning and information gathering needed by the task force. The groups will include families, community members, teachers, students, and experts in the areas identified above in the make-up of the task force.

Health and Wellness Update

Rhode Island is providing free testing for its residents, particularly those who work in childcare or who attended rallies and protests over the past few days. To learn more, go to portalri.gov

2020-2021 School Calendar Update

The Rhode Island Department of Education, in collaboration with the state teacher unions, the Governor, and the Rhode Island Department of Health issued a statewide calendar for students. The First Day of School for students will be August 31, 2020, and the last day will be June 16, 2021. Barrington Public Schools will work with its task force, school committee, and teachers’ union to establish the additional teacher days required by the contract. Some highlights of the calendar include

Reentry to School

At this time, RIDE, the Governor’s Office, and the RIDOH are working with schools toward a potential full reentry on August 31st, provided we enter Phase III by that date. It is important to note that schools may look different in terms of schedules and structure. Schools will submit plans for reentry by July 17th for RIDE review. Plans will also include contingencies for events in which hybrid models or returns to Distance Learning may be possible. The District will not receive additional guidance on the required content of the plans until June 19th. At this time, we know

  • Plans will adhere to strict health and safety criteria

  • All plans will have the target of August 31 as full reentry for students

  • All plans will stress that contingencies must be in place to prevent learning interruptions

  • The Districts will have partners from RIDE who will work as liaisons during the planning process.

  • All plans must be flexible to meet the unique needs of the community (space, classroom distancing, bussing, number of outbreaks, etc.)

  • Students and families will be advised to stay home if they are under the weather, and plans will have guardrails to ensure that their learning is not interrupted when this occurs.

Directions to Submit Questions

We know that you will have many questions along the way. We will answer questions as the information is made available through our Superintendent’s Task Force. Please use this form to submit questions. https://forms.gle/mYSCntugF3vSvSDA8 We ask for patience, as there are many questions without answers or with answers that are changing rapidly with every new day.

A Statewide Celebration of the Class of 2020: Your Year 2020

RI PBS is hosting a state-wide celebration of seniors on June 15th at 7:00 PM. Schools and students from across the state, including Barrington High, submitted videos, art, music, and speeches. Actress, Viola Davis, will lead the Keynote.

Good Afternoon Families,

I hope you are continuing to stay safe and healthy. I want to thank you and our incredible teachers and staff who are continuing to make the best of our present situation for our children.

The administration is in the process of developing plans for student summer learning opportunities and the start of the next school year.  How schools will open next year will depend on the status of the pandemic and the criteria surrounding the health, safety, and social distancing requirements for re-entry. We formed a District Re-entry Committee, and we will provide you with more information and guidance over the next few weeks.

Stay well, stay positive, and have a good weekend.

Mike

Dear Barrington High School Families, Students, and Staff

From now until graduation, we will continue to provide regular updates regarding events and ceremonies for the graduating Class of 2020. These future updates will be directly shared from the High School to students, families, and staff members. We appreciate all of your continued support and suggestions.

After our communication yesterday, we have had the opportunity for continued collaboration with our administrative team, the State, and other district leaders. Based on the most recent guidance and suggestions, we can make some adjustments to our initial plan. Specific details will be provided from the High School, once we have more information.

Adjustments to the 5/13/2020 Communication

  • Students will have their cap and gown and their diploma cover delivered to their homes before the ceremony outline below.

  • Beginning the week of May 26th through June 5th, each student will drive to a designated area at BHS with their family. Appointments with dates and times will be made alphabetically. Students must be present on the date and time assigned so that we can reach all graduates.

  • Only the student and two family members will be allowed to exit the car, parents for pictures, and the student to walk across the graduation platform. All other members of the family must remain in the car to adhere to the five-person maximum limit.

  • This in-person walk across the stage will occur outside, under a tent. The platform will be decorated with the Barrington Banner and celebratory flowers.

  • A video will be recorded as the student walks the stage. The video compilation will include the student’s name as they walk the stage. We will live stream this video on Sunday, June, 7th at 2 PM.

  • All students, family members, and staff will be required to wear their masks at all times, including during the pictures, per the Governor’s Office and Rhode Island Department of Education Guidance.

  • The Student Resource Officer will monitor the process for the safety of all involved.

Thank you for your continued patience and support. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to Principal Hurley.

Sincerely,

Michael Messore, III

Superintendent

Dear Members of the Barrington Community,

As we get closer to the end of the year, I would like to provide you with communication regarding high school graduation. Over the last few weeks, Principal Joseph Hurley, along with senior student representatives, Student Council advisors, the Senior Class advisors, members of the BHS School Improvement Team, and the Director of Athletics and Student Activities, met on several occasions. The team reviewed the many ideas and suggestions they received from parents, teachers, and students regarding how to hold a graduation ceremony during these unprecedented times.  After engaging with students and stakeholders, we are in the process of finalizing plans for graduation and the end of the year activities. We fully understand that this is a challenging time for our seniors and the community. Throughout our planning process, our foremost thoughts are on making this a memorable experience for our seniors. At the same time, we must ensure that we strictly follow the state guidelines on hosting graduations as well as adhering to Rhode Island's Department of Health advisories.

We understand that nothing we plan will replace the experiences of a student receiving a diploma in front of your classmates, families, teachers, and community. Graduating from high school is an important milestone in a student's life, which is a result of many years of hard work, relationships with classmates and teachers as well as opportunities to be part of a variety of school activities. Now is a time that we need to rally together and support and honor our graduates in alternative ways.

Please be assured that everyone from the high school worked diligently to investigate multiple approaches to graduation using the guidance of the RI Department of Education and RI Department of Health. The state guidelines are informed by RI's ongoing collection and analysis of COVID-19 related data. As we move forward to celebrate the accomplishments of the students, our responsibility in finishing the school year will be to follow the guidelines presented to us by the State. We strive to make sure that all decisions include the evaluation of the health and safety of our students, staff, families, and community members. We understand that some protocols are being permitted in other venues, which the Governor's guidance for graduation prohibited, and that these inconsistencies lead to confusion. As we celebrate and recognize our extraordinary students, we do not want to create an opportunity for any member of the Barrington community to contract COVID-19 during a graduation ceremony. Furthermore, we are mindful of the fact that many of the people who want to honor our graduates fit the demographics vulnerable to COVID-19.

Below are some ideas that we are in the process of considering and finalizing while others we had to eliminate from consideration if we were to provide a graduation experience that adheres to Rhode Island's public health advisories.

Broadcasting on Television / Facebook

We are also exploring other options to support the communal viewing of the graduation ceremony including Facebook viewing parties. To date, BHS will participate in the following

Parade Through the Town Honoring the Class of 2020

A proposed Barrington Education Foundation (BEF)/Seniors' Last Day Car Parade (5/29) is in the planning stages. More details will be provided for staff, families, and students as soon as possible.

Decorating Aspects of the Blue and Gold

  • Barrington Public Schools has commissioned BHS Class of 2020 congratulation signs (2 fence lengths) will be hung on the fence across from the White Church, along with the message board.

  • Thanks to the collaboration between the Barrington Business Association, the Town of Barrington, and Barrington Public Schools, BHS Class of 2020 Banners with each student’s name will be hung from the lamp posts on County Road and Maple Avenue beginning the week of 5/18.

Lawn Signs Recognizing 2020 Graduates

The Class of 2020 purchased signs celebrating our graduates and parents helped organize and distribute these to students across town starting May 13th.

BHS Graduation Ceremony 2020

In the next two weeks, students will have their caps and gowns, along with their diploma jackets delivered to their homes.  Students will receive a time to report to the high school to take a video of them walking across the auditorium stage dressed in their cap and gown based on their last name.  Students will wear their masks and remain socially distanced as they approach the stage. Only one student will be allowed to enter the building at the designated time, and only five students will be on-site at a time.  As they walk across the stage with the diploma jacket in hand, they will stop for a photo with their masks on. After the picture, they will flip their tassel and proceed off the stage. The videos of each student will then be used to compile our virtual graduation ceremony.

At face value, a virtual graduation may appear to be an easy undertaking however it is not as simple as it appears.  On April 29, the Governor announced that social events and in-person gatherings larger than 50 people will not be allowed through the end of the summer- this includes in-person high school graduations. Further guidance on May 8th states: “Any district considering this option must ensure that all involved adhere to all directives contained with the Governor’s Executive Orders and all RIDOH rules, regulations and guidance around gatherings and community mitigation strategies.” Since no in-person ceremonies of any kind are allowed, virtual ceremonies are an option for districts celebrating their graduates. In preparation of content for the virtual graduation, any district considering recording students walking across the stage, one at a time, must ensure that all involved adhere to all directives contained with the Governor’s Executive Orders and all Rhode Island Department of Health rules, regulations and guidance around gatherings and community mitigation strategies.

To be clear, we will follow the directions we have received from the Governor’s Office and the Rhode Island Department of Health. The guidance goes on to list seven (7) points:

  • There should be no more than five (5) people total gathered at any time, including the student, staff member(s), photographer, etc. Compliance with this five-person rule will likely require you to do this one student at a time, and will require sufficient time scheduled between students.

  • Masks must be worn by all at all times.

  • All individuals must remain six (6) feet apart at all times. In order to maintain the six feet apart rule, no handshaking or passing of a diploma should occur.

  •  Any surface areas touched by the student (e.g., hand-rail) must be disinfected between graduates.

  • Staff should be required to wash their hands frequently.

  • All individuals (including staff and each student) must be screened before entering for any symptoms or risk factors. This screening can be done verbally. Sample screening questions can be found at: https://health.ri.gov/forms/screening/COVID19_Employee_Screening_Tool.pdf

  • Every student and staff member involved must be required to remain home if sick.

The virtual graduation ceremony will be live broadcasted on Sunday, June 7th at 2PM developed from the videos.

Drive-In Graduation

We explored ways to display the virtual graduation video during a drive-in type of graduation ceremony.  The original guidance from the RI Department of Education and RI Department of Health and the updated May 8th guidance addresses this topic: “To be clear, in such a situation, no one should be allowed to get out of the car and nothing should be passed from car to car. Everyone must remain in their car, and as a result, there can be no handing out of diplomas, handshaking or getting out of the car to take pictures. Cars that are within six feet of each other must be required to have the windows up at all times.” Several superintendents across the state shared that they too explored drive-in type graduation viewings and confirmed that if they elected this option these viewings would not include students exiting vehicles. In addition, restrooms continue to be problematic. Finally, due to the potential of holding a ceremony on a day with high temperatures and since car windows are required to be closed, concerns exist regarding people getting out of their cars and the environmental impact of running cars. Many drive-in viewing options were explored; however, the restrictions were too prohibitive.

Thank You

We sincerely wish that circumstances were different, and our graduating seniors were able to experience a traditional senior year. However, there is nothing we can do to reverse the negative impacts inflicted upon us by a situation outside of our control. We need to focus on celebrating our senior class while making sure that we follow all state and Federal public health restrictions that are necessary to protect the children and adults of our community. Now is the time to unite to support them, encourage them, appreciate them, and safely recognize Barrington High School’s graduating Class of 2020. We value the support, kindness, suggestions, and offers of assistance our families and communities have directed toward our graduates and the efforts that our student leaders have invested to make these celebrations possible.

Our plans for graduation are near the final stages. Mr. Hurley and the graduation planning committee continue to work together to create a memorable experience for all seniors. We will continue to monitor all updated state protocols.Thank you for your continued patience and partnership as we navigate these challenging and changing times. If you have additional thoughts and suggestions, you may continue to share them with Mr. Hurley as he is continuing to coordinate graduation plans.

Sincerely,

Michael Messore, III

Superintendent

Request from Chartwells

In the spirit of continuing to bring people together and help our communities, we had an idea and hope you’ll join us in our effort to bring more people a smile.  In our Morrison Living senior communities, extra precautions are in place, which does not allow residents to receive visitors or gather in groups.  We’re working to rally children across the country to help “Send a Smile” that will be delivered to seniors with their meals. We’ve developed a fun activity packet for students to print at home and have some fun.  The bundle features spaces for students to introduce themselves, draw a picture, or write a letter.  Once completed, students and families can drop it in the mail, and our team will take care of delivering it to brighten a senior’s day.

Send A Smile Newsletter Link for families:   https://conta.cc/3b9PJdk

Morrison Living serves more than 475 communities across the country and over 70,000 residents! We think that’s a lot of people who deserve a smile. We hope that we can collectively deliver thousands and thousands and thousands of letters across the country. We’d love to have your children share even more SMILES!

Dear Families,

Thank you, families, for all you are doing to support your child’s education during these challenging times.  I know it has been challenging to balance your work obligations, oversee your new “distance learning students,” and do everything you can to keep your family safe during this pandemic.  Please take time over the weekend to relax and continue to stay active in your family activities.   A silver lining in these challenging times is that you have an opportunity to be together.

Stay safe and enjoy the weekend.

Teacher Appreciation Week Starts Monday!

Various celebrations will occur virtually throughout the District. If you are posting a celebration or a thank you, please consider using the tag #bpsriTeachersExcel

Student Social-Emotional Well-Being

We welcome ideas and opportunities for students to collaborate and meet informally. Some options that are provided include clubs, virtual lunch groups, digital pen pals, kind video messages, and FAST, collaborative projects. Families are encouraged to facilitate further opportunities. Some tools that can help with this are Google Hangouts, Google Docs and Flipgrid.

COVID-19 is causing many people across RI to feel overwhelmed. Consuming news about this pandemic can increase feelings of fear and anxiety among people of all ages and backgrounds.  We may worry about our health and the health of our loved ones; have trouble sleeping; eat more or less; experience physical discomfort, and have flare-ups in pre-existing health conditions.

To feel better, we need to learn healthy ways to manage the stress associated with COVID-19.  Therefore, Family Services of Rhode Island (FSRI) has launched BE WELL RI, a a new initiative aimed at decreasing stress and anxiety, promoting healing from trauma, and supporting the resilience of Rhode Islanders in mind and body to protect themselves against COVID-19. Through our highly trained clinicians and care workers (many of whom are nationally recognized experts in their field) we are providing:

●      Individual counseling and support

●      Organizational consultations

●      Free weekly public wellness sessions, through Facebook LIVE

●      Group Training

This new initiative, a a complement to Be Safe, allows FSRI to offer a complete approach to manage health and healing during these uncertain times. To read more about this new the initiative, visit bewellri.org and to visit @FamilyServiceRI on Facebook to view our prior live sessions.

End of Year Celebrations and Transition Events

The district is working with RIDE and planning committees in each building. If you have thoughts or suggestions, please reach out to your child’s principal. We will provide communications and updates through each building as information becomes available on the very special celebrations and transition events that we are creating for our amazing students.

Grading and Assessments

We will send out updates on the end of year grading protocols ad assessments next week.

April 24, 2020

Yesterday, the Governor announced that schools throughout Rhode Island will be close for the remainder of the school year. For the safety of our students, staff, and the community, it is safest that we remain closed for the rest of the school year. We are all very disappointed that we have to end school in this way.  Distance learning is working, and we will continue to work on providing our students with quality education and the necessary supports that they need to finish the year. Our students readily engaged in their learning, and we are confident they will be ready to transition in the fall to their next level of education.  We are working hard to find meaningful and special ways to end the school year.  All of us need to remain resilient and supportive of one another as we continue to get through this together.

High School News

Celebrating the RI High School Graduating Class of 2020

The high school administration has been reviewing the many ideas they are receiving from parents, teachers, and students who have been providing them with creative suggestions as to what the end of the year might look like for our seniors.

Principal Joe Hurley and Mr. Finn Director of Athletics and Student Activities have been and will continue to meet with the Student Council advisors, the Senior Class advisors, and students to plans for the end of the year activities.  Now that we have heard the final decision from the Governor regarding school closures we will now be awaiting further guidance from the Governor as to how we will need to adhere to all DOH and RIDE guidelines for the rest of the year.

We never thought, when we began the school year, we would be ending it this way. Be assured that we will do the best we can to support our seniors (as well as all of our students) as we end the school year.

Dear Families,

I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that tomorrow, April 17, and next Wednesday, April 29, are teacher professional development days, and there will be no school for students.

Tomorrow our teachers will collaborate on developing lessons and instructional strategies through technology to meet the needs of our students as we continue with distance learning. During this time, we will take the opportunity to develop guidance relative to Screen Lite Wednesdays, accessing and assigning office hours and, accessing and engaging students during FAST. We will also create backup materials from lessons teachers presented during Zoom for the students who may have been absent, struggling with connectivity issues, or in need of review.

We appreciate your support as we work to refine our system to ensure that all students are excelling in this new model. Please reach out to your building principals if you have any questions or needs relative to your family. Despite the many challenges we are facing, I would like to reassure you that we are fully committed to doing everything we can to support our students and you through this difficult time.

Please remember that food programs are available to families in need. I want to inform you of a free breakfast and lunch program for your children. This program is through the Town of Barrington and provided by Hope and Main. The meals will be picked up and delivered right to your doorstep by town volunteers. April 8, 2020 5:00 PM

Good afternoon BPS families,

I want to thank and recognize our families for your work in supporting us in delivering Distance Learning by partnering with us in educating your children during unprecedented times.  I know there are many challenges families face each day as you balance your personal lives with your children's education.  After gathering feedback from staff, students, and families with the goal of best meeting the needs of all of the educational stakeholders, we are making some adjustments to how we deliver Distance Learning. We know consistency is essential, as well as sustainability; therefore, over the next two weeks, we will be revising the schedules of our students in grades 4-12. We do not foresee any additional significant changes in the delivery of instruction, after the next two weeks.  The building administrators are always willing to work with families based upon their circumstances, so please reach out to your principals if you have any questions or if you need assistance.

Take the next couple of days to rest, find ways to engage your children in-home activities, and continue to follow the guidelines from the Governor and the Department of Health.   The health and well-being of our community is our priority.

Have a good long weekend.

Mike Messore

BPS Distance Learning Updates & Adjustments

As a reminder to all families, the Commissioner of Education designated Thursday and Friday, April 9 and 10, as vacation days for staff and students and Friday, April 17th as a professional development day for teachers and a no school day for students.

Plan Adjustments

K-3 Distance Learning Adjustments

The K-3 schools appreciate the feedback, support, and collaboration provided by families as they continue to help their child/ren with Distance Learning. As you know, to reduce screen time, K-3 has decreased check-ins, minimized transitions, and reduced special subject classes. Students will meet with their Special Subject classes (Art, PE/Health, Music, Library) once per week. Currently, K-3 teachers are building offline activities to incorporate into the curriculum. Some of these activities include reading independently, journaling, engaging in environmental math, or participating in family activities such as cooking, gardening, riding bikes, or playing games. Many classroom teachers have already shared updated schedules. If you have not received an updated schedule yet, your classroom teacher will be in communication with you soon.

Once we implement these changes, we do not anticipate any further changes to the schedule at the school level, unless directed by the Governor of Rhode Island or the Commissioner of Education. As always, if your family requires unique adjustments to the schedule, please reach out to the principal. Thank you for your tremendous partnership.

Hampden Meadows Distance Learning Adjustments

To support all learners, families, and teachers at Hampden Meadows School during this unprecedented time, we made some adjustments to the schedule. After three weeks of instruction, we analyzed feedback from families, teachers, and students. The changes reflect the overall trends from that feedback. As such, HMS will decrease screen time, reduce the number of transitions, allow for an extended midday break, support students who receive interventions, allow for some flexibility for families with students in multiple buildings, and provide planning and collaboration opportunities for teachers.

The shifts at HMS will occur in two phases to allow teachers time to communicate with their families

Phase 1

  • Starting on Monday, 4/13, HMS will begin the school day at 8:00 am and end the day with a meeting that begins no later than 2:00. Teachers will communicate the class Zoom times for the week of the 13th no later than the end of the day on Friday, 4/10, for your planning purposes.

Phase 2

  • Beginning the week of April 20th, the new classroom schedules, as communicated by the teacher, will go into effect. Teachers will communicate the new schedule by the end of the day on April 17th.
  • Also, grades 4-12 will implement a "Screen Lite" Wednesday on all five-day weeks. The purpose of "Screen-Lite" Wednesdays is to reduce screen time, while still providing opportunities for learning and teacher-student connection through a chance for office hours. Teachers will also use this time to give feedback, collaborate, and develop lessons for their students.

Once we implement these changes, we do not anticipate any further changes to the schedule at the school level, unless directed by the Governor of Rhode Island or the Commissioner of Education. As always, if your family requires unique adjustments to the schedule, please reach out to the principal, Tracey McGee.

Barrington Middle School Distance Learning Adjustments

When Barrington Middle School started this journey, we knew that after a few weeks, we would likely need to reassess our plan and modify it to meet the needs of our students best.  Based on feedback from students, families, and staff, we have revised our distance learning plan to place emphasis on balancing screen time, quality of instruction vs. quantity of instruction, and to meet the academic/social-emotional needs of the middle school-aged student.

The shifts at BMS will occur in two phases to allow teachers time to communicate with their families

Phase 1:

  • Starting on Monday, 4/13, BMS will begin their distance learning block schedule. Students will continue to check-in to the homeroom google classroom by 8:42 am for attendance, and then follow-their distance learning block schedule for the day.
  • Each morning, BMS will be posting the daily schedule to the homeroom google classroom.

Phase 2

  • Beginning the week of April 20th, BMS will be implementing "Screen-Lite" Wednesdays on all five-day weeks.  The purpose of "Screen-Lite" Wednesdays is to reduce screen time, while still providing students with learning opportunities and time to connect with their teachers.  On Wednesday, students will check-in to the homeroom google classroom by 8:42 am for attendance and then complete their assignments throughout the day.

Once we implement these changes, we do not anticipate any further changes to the schedule at the school level, unless directed by the Governor of Rhode Island or the Commissioner of Education. As always, if your family requires unique adjustments to the schedule, please reach out to the principal, Andrew Anderson.

Barrington High School Distance Learning Adjustments

BHS appreciates families, students, and staff for their input and continuous updates on the Distance Learning plan.  As a result of assessing feedback on the plan after the initial implementation, it became evident from the feedback provided that the amount of screen time for both students and teachers is a significant source of concern.

Therefore, over the past week, administrators collaborated with the high school department chairs to make adjustments in the Distance Learning schedule.

1.     The schedule reduces the amount of screen time for students by limiting the number of classes that meet per day. We will begin implementing the new schedule on Monday, April 13th

2.     The schedule provides one day per week that we termed "Screen-Lite" Wednesday, which will occur on all five-day weeks. The intent of Screen-Lite Wednesday is to have students engage in assignments that will include options such as hands-on activities, reading, journaling, math on paper, outdoor movement, chemistry in the kitchen, etc.   However, as there are only four days next week due to the Friday, April 17th Professional Development day, the Screen-Lite Wednesday portion of the schedule will begin during the week of April 20th.

Please take some time to review the new Distance Learning schedule (click here for link).

As with the first Distance Learning plan schedule, we will continue to assess what is working well and what is not.  I encourage you to continue to provide input, as this will help guide our decisions as we begin the second phase of our virtual learning plan.  Also, please continue to utilize the link on the Barrington High School website that provides BHS Distance Learning contact information. This useful link will help direct you to the person you may need to provide support, answer questions, or resolve issues.  Our high school tech specialist, Beth O'Connell, has provided the following link to help students who are experiencing technical difficulties.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yrG5K3p9HU1slLajEArvZyeoUqHyU9HfqKWL3NniYVo/edit?usp=sharingonline tech request

Once we implement these changes, we do not anticipate any further changes to the schedule at the school level, unless directed by the Governor of Rhode Island or the Commissioner of Education. As always, if your family requires unique adjustments to the schedule, please reach out to the principal, Joseph Hurley.

Junior, School Day SATs, will be held in the fall, date to be determined.

Parents and Seniors should have received revised expectations and requirements for this year's senior project. If you have any questions, please contact your senior project coordinator or school counselor.

Face Covers

In addition to social sustaining, when you must leave your home, the Governor reminds us to cover our noses and mouths with any cloth secured around our heads. Covering your nose and mouths limits those who are asymptomatic from accidentally spreading the virus.

Census Reminder

Every ten years, the federal government is required by the Constitution to conduct a complete count of the U.S. population. The results of the 2020 Census will have enormous implications for Rhode Island for the next decade - from federal funding for health care, roads, and schools, to our representation in Congress. It only takes a few quick minutes to complete, and the information you provide is confidential and protected by federal law.

In response to the coronavirus outbreak, the U.S. Census Bureau is adjusting its procedures and strongly encouraging households to self-respond to the Census. Self-responding has never been easier, and you can do so onlineover the phone, or by mail. You may have already received information in the mail from the Census Bureau on how to do this, but you can also visit https://2020census.gov if you have questions. The Congressional Research Service has also compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions for the 2020 Census. Additionally, and importantly, Providence County residents still have to complete the 2020 Census to be officially counted, even if you participated in the 2018 End-to-End Census Test.

A Message from the Barrington Public Library

I want to inform our community that Barrington Public Library will remain closed through April 30 due to the continuing global pandemic known as COVID-19 (coronavirus).  As a reminder, all due dates for library materials have been extended to May 1, and all fines will be waived as of March 1. Our statewide delivery is canceled while our library buildings are closed, and all holds are suspended. If you placed an item on hold, please know that they should be there for you when our library reopens. We are welcoming new library users to apply for a library card online. Your library card will grant you access to statewide digital resources like eZone, where you can read eBooks and listen to audiobooks from OverDrive. I encourage students to take advantage of the thousands of titles available, including graphic novels and the 2020 Rhode Island Teen Book Award Nominees—there is something for everyone. Have you tried our new virtual chat service? Weekdays you can chat directly with our Information Service librarians Ben Hanley and Jane Granatino. Ask questions about your library account, get help with accessing our digital resources, find credible news sources, and more. This new service is available on our website. This is a time to be nimble, to stretch our minds and our hearts in ways we never imagined. For my staff and me, this means questioning what it means to be a library without a building. This week we are trying virtual programs through Zoom and our YouTube channel and plan to roll out additional virtual programs throughout April. Come and find us in our new virtual meeting spaces. All programs will be listed on our website with instructions on how to "attend." Keep in touch with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, at our website or by subscribing to our email newsletter. If you know of a friend who might like to learn more about their library, please share this email with them. And keep reading! Kris Chin, Library Director.

Have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Good Afternoon Barrington Families and Learning Community,

We want to take this opportunity to provide you an update based on a conference call that we had with Commissioner Infante Green today, followed by Governor Raimondo's Press Conference.

The guidance from the Commissioner and Governor indicates that we will engage in Distance Learning at least through the end of April. The Governor and the Commissioner shared the following points that are important for you to be aware of, especially regarding the immediate changes to the April school calendar.

  1. Per the Governor and the Commissioner, April 3 and 17 are Planning/PD days - no virtual instruction. Teachers and administrators should use these days to continue planning for distance learning. The support staff will engage in professional learning or other plans as provided by Pupil Personnel. No live classes will occur on these days.

  2. Per the Governor and the Commissioner, April 9 and 10 are Vacation Days. No staff meetings or classes will occur on these days. Enjoy the long weekend!

  3. Per the Commissioner, the changes to the calendar do not need to be made up and are included in our 180 days.

  4. Per Governor Raimondo, hot spots on cell phones for all students and families without Internet will now be available with free activation, no charge, no overage charges through May 18 on Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

  5. Cox will provide two free months of service and $10 a month after that, for those that qualify based on income. Districts will pay for the $10 a month for Cox for those eligible and who do not have hotspots on their cells. For families that do not qualify, Cox will provide one free month of Internet access for families who do not already have it.

  6. April Reading Challenge - The Governor's challenge to read - book distribution at grab and go breakfast, curbside pickup at some public libraries, and books mailed home to students from Districts for those who are eligible based on income. Schools and students are encouraged to post their reading adventures on social media.  Please review the details at the end of the email.

  7. RIDE anticipates that we will receive a waiver for all State testing. They canceled the SAT school day administration. RIDE is working with the College Board for juniors to take the SAT in the fall. RIDE will base school accountability measures on 2018-2019.

  8. RIDE has developed a page to provide regular updates on their website - https://www.ride.ri.gov/Home.aspx

  9. Kidslink - 1-855-543-5465 - is a service available for mental health help for kids. You can access Kidslink on the Bradley Hospital Website.

  10. The Governor reminds everyone able to stay home to do so, especially if ill. She directs everyone to social distance, to maintain groups less than 5, and to wash their hands frequently. Social distancing also applies to outdoor areas.

● Read to your siblings, your family members, even your pets!

● Create a goal to increase minutes each day to get up to uninterrupted minutes of reading

● Tracking the challenge:

○ Families, students, and teachers can add reading minutes to the Reading Challenge weekly log on RIDE's website

○ Older students with social media accounts can post the books they read online. They can work with classmates to set up virtual book clubs and discussion chats. Make the book into a song. Challenge a friend or classmate to join you. Be creative!

○ Young students can draw a picture or write a few sentences of a book they read with their families or teachers to post online

○ All ages can dress up like a character and explain the character traits or how a character has developed over time by acting it out

Teachers & Leaders:

● Teachers can record videos reading a book and post on their Google classroom

● Teachers can incorporate read-a-loud time into their daily lessons through video conferences with students

● Teachers can create assignments (i.e book reports and posts related to the book) to show students finished a book

● Teachers can keep track of how many of their students and how many days they completed the challenge and report to their school leader through a reading log sheet

● Leaders can record read-a-loud videos and post on social media (potential copyright issues – see here for guidance)

● Leaders can encourage friendly competition amongst grades or between schools/districts

Families:

● Read with their children and engage them by asking questions before, during, and after reading a book

● Families can record videos/take a photo reading a book and post on social media

● Families can start a book club

● Families can go outside and explore what they are reading about in books

Community:

● Partners can hold virtual events with authors throughout the month

● Partners can hold storytimes virtually, on tv or on the radio

● Key influencers (elected officials, cabinet members, members of the media) are challenged to record reading a book and posting to social media with #RIReadsAtHome

The Resources:

Book Distribution: The following organizations have books available to give to families for free! They are currently putting the books into packets by grade level to be ready to distribute for April! We will be working with meal sites and districts to distribute the books throughout the month. Stay tuned for locations where you can pick up books!

● Books Are Wings

● RI Center for the Book/Kids Reading Across RI

● Reach Out and Read

● RI Festival of Children's Books and Authors

Free Online Literacy Resources:

● RI Office of Library and Information Services is offering several online literacy platforms:

o List of Online Library Resources: includes e-books ordered by grade level (early

elementary, elementary, middle and high school) o Tumble Book Library: a collection of animated talking picture books, read- alongs, e-books, quizzes, lesson plans, and educational games for beginning readers o Ocean State Libraries Ezone: extensive e-book collection available to all Rhode

Islanders

● Audible.com: Free children's audiobooks and stories in six different languages that can stream on desktops, laptops, phones or tablets.

● Scholastic Learn at Home: online books and projects for students in Pre-K to 9th grade

● Read Works: online books, articles and reading passages for students K-12th grade.

● Actively Learn: hundreds of online books and interactive questions for students 2nd to 12th grade

● Gutenberg: Free e-book project with a large section for secondary school students

Tips for Reading Development Outside of School (from RIDE's Family Toolkit):

Tips for helping students who are learning to read:

● Read, talk, sing, and communicate with your child in any of the languages that they understand.

● Visit online resources with your child (i.e., scholastic.com, startwithabook.com) to expose them to books.

Tips for Helping Developing/Independent Readers: Fluency Strategies:

● Read a passage of a book aloud while your child tracks the words with their finger. Then, have your child read the same passage to you.

● Take turns reading with your child by alternating paragraphs.

● Read aloud to your child. Then, have them read it back to you. Tell them to match their voice to yours.

● Tell your child to read their favorite books and poems out loud over and over again. Practice getting smoother and reading with expression.

● Have your child record their voice and listen to it as they read along with their text. Reading Comprehension Strategies:

● As your child reads independently:

○ Tell them to write down any questions they have on a post-it note.

○ Encourage them to keep a list of unknown or confusing words. Then, assist them in defining the words.

● After reading:

○ Talk to your child about what they read. If they correctly understood the text, they should tell you about the main characters, problems, anything that surprised them, or other aspects of the story.

○ Have them sketch a scene.

○ Have them create a book quiz for someone else.

○ Have them build a character web explaining character relationships.

● Questions To Ask Your Child about Reading:

○ What is this story about?

○ Who's telling the story?

○ Who is your favorite character? What are their character traits?

○ Have you noticed any changes in the character? Identify evidence of it.

○ What is similar/different about two characters?

○ If you were to rewrite a section of the text, what would you change, and why?

Dear Families,

We apologize for the late communication today. We want to take this opportunity to provide you with a copy of our update on Distance Learning that we provided to the School Committee this evening. Our presentation can be accessed by clicking here.  As we move forward, we will be analyzing feedback and adjusting our Distance Learning plan. If you have questions regarding your child, please reach out to your building principal, who will work directly with you.

We understand that distance learning is new to everyone, and we are here to support it. If a student is experiencing issues with their device, please check the Chromebook Troubleshooting Guide, which can help resolve common issues. Students and Parents need to log technology issues so we can more efficiently support our new model of teaching and learning.  Students and their families must fill out the Distance Learning Tech Support Google Form to receive assistance.  We have minimal access to staff and buildings at this time.  Please keep this in mind if you need to pick up a device.  We may not be able to meet requests for specific times.

Day 1

Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement today. Our teachers and students have shared positive messages about their opportunity to reconnect. We will continue to review feedback on our Distance Learning Plan, which will use to assess the need for potential adjustments at the end of next week.

Technology

Thank you to everyone for their understanding and flexibility in working through our connectivity issues today.  All parties worked hard to address the problems as fast as possible.  To ensure that our devices are filtered from inappropriate content, their web traffic is sent through a server provided by Cox.  Cox has added another server to accommodate the increase of traffic due to distance learning as well as other adjustments to reduce traffic to specific sites.  The additional server should eliminate the connection issues we were seeing throughout the day today.  We are recommending that everyone power off their device and turn it back on before their next use.

We are here for you. Please don't hesitate to reach out to principals with questions or to address concerns specific to you or your child. Links are available below for anyone needing assistance with breakfast, lunch or wifi. In addition, we have included links for the Rhode Island Department of Health and Mental Health Resources.

March 24, 2020 4:30 PM

Dear Students and Families,

Tomorrow Wednesday, March 25th, educators, students, and families will be venturing into a new world of delivering virtual instruction to our students. Over the last week, our administrators and educators have worked hard to prepare lessons and learn new ways of providing virtual instruction.  Distance Learning is new to all of us, so do not panic; if something goes wrong, contact your principal, and they will assist you.  Remember, we are learning together. Over the next two weeks, we will reflect on the process and look at making the necessary adjustments to improve instructions for our staff and students.  Your feedback is important to us.

Get a good night's rest, tomorrow is a school day, and we will do our very best as a learning community tomorrow. Please let your teachers and principals know if you need any support.

We wish your family success in the rollout in Distant Learning tomorrow.

Mike Messore

Superintendent

Students Receiving Special Education and Related Services

As the health and safety of our entire community are paramount, we will be following the governor's orders of delivering all education through Distance Learning. We want to assure you that much care has gone into the planning for special education and related services. Our teams are on the job and doing all that they can to prepare for a successful learning experience for all students.

Your student's case manager or related service provider will be in contact with you regarding the most reasonable and appropriate way to provide your child with free and appropriate education (FAPE) in light of the circumstances.  One way to provide direct instruction and related services, virtually, is through Zoom. However, we know that this kind of virtual learning platform may not be appropriate for all of our learners. The school staff who know your child best will work with you to devise an individualized plan.  The plans we create will address the curriculum as well as alignment to the student's IEP goals, which service providers will log each day.

We will continue to hold Special Education meetings (IEP meetings, Eligibility Meetings, etc.) virtually.  The primary way that we will do this is through Zoom or phone conferences. We will work with you to develop alternative plans if needed.

Please reach out to your child's case manager or principal if you have specific questions regarding your child. Also, please contact Kristen Matthes  (matthesk@barringtonschools.org) if you have further questions and concerns.

The rest of this message is a repeat from yesterday:

A Message to Our Students:

Schedules and Directions

We have some important news to share with all of you. You will receive your schedules from your teachers and principals if you have not already. Teachers will likely use some of the first days to do check-ins, acclimate the students to the technology system, and take time to work on routines. If you are concerned about the Distance Learning Plan and how it will work for you, please contact the principal who will work with you on a plan.

Please join your teachers' Google Classrooms, if you have not done so already. If you are having trouble getting into a live session, check-in for attendance in Google Classroom and read the directions for the work for the day. If you are experiencing difficulty, email your teacher and let them know you are working in Google Classroom but were unable to engage in Zoom.

If your family prefers that your name does not appear in Zoom, please reach out to your teacher for directions on how to enter the room using an agreed-upon name.

Dear Students and Families,

The teachers and principals are working hard to get ready for the start of Distant Learning next week. They all have shared how much they miss seeing their students in school every day.

A Message to Our Students:

Schedules and Directions

We have some important news to share with all of you. You will receive a schedule and directions for distance learning from your principals and teachers this weekend. Please read it carefully, and you can email your teachers if you have any questions.

Starting on March 25th, you will log in to Zoom at the time your class usually meets each day. Teachers will take attendance then. Your family should email the secretary if you are going to be absent. If you are going to miss a period or a class, email your teacher. We know there may be times when you are working very hard but can’t log in for a live session. You will not be marked absent as long as your teacher knows you are doing your work, and you regularly attend the live meetings.

Lessons will begin with a live introduction with your teachers on Zoom, independent work on your own with the assignments posted in Google Classroom, and end with a live debrief with your teachers in Zoom. Teachers will notify you if they are not holding a session by email or in Google Classroom.

Technology

Mr. Burrows, in the technology department, would like you to know that we changed settings that will help you at home when using the district devices. March 19, 2020 4:20 PM

Good Afternoon Families,

We wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with a brief update and access to supports and services that you may need. At this time, we continue to prepare our teachers and staff for our Distance Learning Plan. Tomorrow we will be sending out a student friendly message to prepare them for next week.

Importantly, as of today, we have no new news from the Rhode Island Department of Education. At the end of this email, we have included the most recent newsletter from the Rhode Island Department of Health. Governor Raimondo's message remains the same that public schools will be closed for at least through Friday, April 3 — due to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Technology and Internet Access

*** Cox opened all Cox WIFI hotspots around the country and turned the bandwidth way up.  There are hotspots all over Rhode Island.

Here is the link on where to find the Cox WIFI hotspots and how to log in. Anyone can log in and set up a username and password.    https://www.cox.com/residential/internet/learn/cox-hotspots.html

Cox Residential is also working with all of the schools to make sure that if there are any students that don’t have Internet at home (CoxConnect2Compete) that they will put it in for free for a certain amount of time.

K-3 families, if you did not request a device and are finding that with multiple children, you need one; please email Dave Burrows Director of Technology at burrowsd@barringtonschools.org  to request a device. It is best to have a device available for each student.

Optimal devices for Distance Learning include a laptop or Chromebook with a microphone and a camera. For K-2 students, an iPad will work well, too. For work, other than longer writing assignments, iPads will work for grade 3, if that is what the student is most comfortable using. While there are many types of devices available, we have not tested them all. To connect to Zoom to view, any mobile device will work.

Mr. Burrows and his team will be available for technical support. Students will not be penalized if their connection gets interrupted or if they are unable to log-in due to technical or family reasons. Parents and students should email teachers when this occurs, so that the teacher may send directions or a link to the Classroom assignment that was missed. We understand that we will face technical challenges, and we will work with you.

We have had a few questions about the Content Keeper login box popping up after logging into your device at home. Simply go to a non HTTPS site first (I use projo.com or cnn.com) and the Content Keeper icon in the top right corner will change from red to green.

If you incur any challenges, please email Dave Burrows directly, as this will help us continuously assess where we are in our DL plan.

Today’s Update from the Rhode Island Department of Health

Coronavirus Disease 2019 Update No. 9

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH), our partners across the State, and national public health officials continue to respond to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). As the situation evolves, we want to make sure that our communities and our healthcare system are prepared. Being informed is an important part of being prepared. For that reason, we intend to send regular Partner Briefings, such as this, to our community partners with updates and key information. Please share this briefing with your colleagues and networks.

COVID-19 Situation Update

Rhode Island Updates:

As of March 18, Rhode Island has 33 cases (including presumptive positive cases). Ten cases were announced on March 18. These cases range in age from their 20s to their 70s. Seven of these cases are female, three are male.

RIDOH has posted current data online. In addition to the positive cases, 540 people had negative test results at RIDOH’s State Health Laboratories, 334 people have tests pending, and approximately 2,500 people have been instructed to self-quarantine in Rhode Island because they had direct contact with a person with COVID-19.

Schools

  • Starting March 23 through April 3, all public K through 12 schools will be conducting distance learning in Rhode Island. The related press release can be found here.
  • The Rhode Island Department of Education has been working with local school districts to make “grab and go” meals available to students while schools are closed. To find the pick-up location closest to you, please visit the Food Sites for Children page on RIDOH’s website.
  • Child care providers have been advised to close. RIDOH is working with child care providers on a case-by-case basis to support those that remain open to do so safely. The related press release can be found here.

Businesses

  • From March 17 to March 30, all dining establishments will be prohibited from offering on-premise food consumption. During this time, dining establishments can offer pick-up, drive-through, and delivery service only. For establishments offering pick-up, dining establishments must comply with the rule barring gatherings of 25 people or more. The related press release can be found here.
  • Gyms have been advised to close. These are facilities that typically host more than 25 people at once.
  • RIDOH is not currently advising barbershops and hair salons to close as long as these facilities do not have more than 25 people gathering at once. If you go to a barbershop or hair salon and there is a large crowd, RIDOH’s recommendation is to turn around and go back home. If, as a staff member or client, you are ill, you should stay home.
  • The Rhode Island Foundation and United Way of Rhode Island have launched a fund to support local nonprofit organizations on the front line of COVID-19 response efforts. The two organizations jointly established the COVID-19 Response Fund and have raised more than $1.5 million in initial contributions. Gifts to the fund, in any amount, can be made with the Rhode Island Foundation or United Way of Rhode Island.
  • Microsoft has agreed to provide their Office 365 E1 program for free for six months to all employers. The Office 365 E1 program includes web-based Microsoft Office applications, resources to support telecommuting such as meetings and instant messaging, as well as remote file sharing. The related press release (for Microsoft and the COVID-19 Response Fund) can be found here.

Utilities

  • The PUC has issued an emergency order mandating that all regulated utilities not terminate services at this time. The state has also directed utilities to stop sending past due accounts to collection agencies and is encouraging non-regulated utilities to do the same. If service is terminated, Rhode Islanders should call their utility provider. If the provider is unable to help, customers should call the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers at 401-780-9700.

Healthcare and Insurance

  • RIDOH has urged dental offices to suspend nonessential, non-urgent dental care. If you are experiencing a dental emergency, please call your dental office first. If you have an appointment for anything less than an emergency, RIDOH recommends cancelling or postponing the appointment.
  • On March 14, Governor Gina M. Raimondo and Rhode Island Health Commissioner Marie Ganim announced new guidance for health insurers related to COVID-19.
    • HealthSource RI is opening a special enrollment period to allow Rhode Islanders to purchase coverage. The special enrollment period will be open from Monday, March 16 through April 15.
    • In addition, insurers have been instructed to:
      • Update telemedicine policies to include telephone-only services for primary care and behavioral health providers.
      • Ensure testing and screening for COVID-19 can be done without prior authorization and without any cost to the patient.
      • Cover prescription refills even if the prescription has yet to run out, provided that the prescription itself would remain valid beyond the refill date. This will allow people to shelter in place, while ensuring that they have adequate supplies on hand for continuity of care and medication compliance.
      • Work to remove barriers to access to services related to COVID-19 that may delay necessary care, including requirements for specialist referrals and prior authorizations.
      • In the event a federally-approved vaccine becomes available for COVID-19, cover the cost of the immunization for all enrollees.
  • On March 18, the Governor signed an executive order directing health insurers to follow previously announced instructions to cover visits conducted over the phone and online during this crisis. This order for an expansion of Telemedicine coverage will apply to primary and specialty care, as well as mental and behavioral healthcare.
  • The Diocese of Providence has announced that Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has authorized the Catholic Social Services of RI to distribute Stop and Shop gift cards to individuals who are temporarily out of work due to COVID-19. The gift cards, ranging from $25-50, will be available for distribution at the Diocesan Social Service Satellite Offices in Woonsocket, West Warwick, and Wakefield, beginning Wednesday, March 18.
    • To receive a gift card and more information, please call the following satellite offices:
      • West Warwick Office: 401-823-6211
      • Woonsocket Office: 401-762-2849
      • Wakefield Office: 401-783-3149

What you can do

  • If you think you have COVID-19, call your healthcare provider. Healthcare providers have a dedicated number that they are using to consult with RIDOH on potential COVID-19 cases.
  • Protect yourself:
    • Please keep in mind that most people who are mildly ill may be able to isolate and care for themselves at home.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • Stay home when you are sick.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with your sleeve or a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
    • Clean (remove dirt, dust, soil, organic matter) and disinfect (using a chemical product to kill pathogens) frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
  • Protect your community:
    • Stay at home if you are sick.
    • Avoid large crowds.
    • If you are at a mass gathering, public event, or religious service, consider waving instead of shaking hands. Do not share chalices, cups, or glasses.
    • Call first. If you are concerned that you may be sick with COVID-19, call your healthcare provider before going to the facility.
    • CDC recommends that facemasks and other protective equipment be reserved for those who are ill and the healthcare workers who are caring for them.
  • RIDOH has activated an information line for COVID-19. For general COVID-19 questions, please call 401-222-8022 or email RIDOH.COVID19Questions@health.ri.gov.
  • For clinical questions about COVID-19, please email RIDOH.ProviderQuestions@health.ri.gov.
  • For COVID-19 information and employment questions, please call the Department of Labor and Training at 401-462-2020, or email dlt.covid19@dlt.ri.gov.
  • People experiencing a behavioral health crisis can call BH Link at 401-414-5465.
  • Remember to only call 911 if you are experiencing a medical emergency.
    • When should someone call 9-1-1?
      • If you see smoke or fire.
      • When someone’s life is threatened or in danger.
      • When someone faints or collapses.
      • When someone has persistent chest pains.
      • When someone has difficulty breathing.
      • When someone has slurred speech or any paralysis.
      • When someone’s face is drooping, or when they seem altered, incoherent or confused.
      • When there is a traffic collision with an injury.
      • Where there are wires down on the ground or street.

March 18, 2020 5:30 PM

Dear Barrington Learning Community,

Please read this critical communication. We apologize for the length of the email. Please take your time to process the information over the next few days.  If you have questions and concerns as we implement the Distance Learning (DL) Plan please contact your building principals with any additional questions specific to your child. Also, we will be sending out a student-friendly communication on Friday for students in grades 4-12 preparing them for next week.

Barrington Distance Learning

Today, in consultation with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), Barrington Public Schools received confirmation that Distance Learning will begin the week of March 23, 2020, through April 6, 2020. At that time, RIDE, in coordination with the Governor, will determine if Distance Learning will extend beyond that date or if the plan requires adjustment. All days completed as Distance Learning count toward our 180 days of student attendance.

In addition to information, guidance, and expectations provided in the communication below, families, please read the attached letter.

Barrington Distance Learning (DL) Plan

We have submitted our DL Plan to RIDE for feedback, as noted yesterday. We included a live link here, with the understanding that RIDE may request some adjustments that we may need to communicate. You may view a quick overview of the plan here

The Schedule for Barrington Public Schools is as Follows

On March 23 and March 24, teachers and support staff will engage in professional development and implementation in preparation for the direct student instruction, which will begin on March 25. March 23 and 24 fall under our inclement weather and professional learning plan, and do not require student attendance and count toward our 180 days.

Student Schedules

Student schedules will closely mirror their school schedule. Teachers will provide schedules at K-5 for parents to follow. The Administrators from 6-12 will provide a copy of the period by period schedule to students and families before Monday. Teachers of younger students will give a suggested breakdown of the day. Families will be able to adjust independent work times as needed to fit the household routine.

Instructional Plan

Teachers will introduce a 5-15 minute lesson on Zoom. Students will work on the experience independently. All student work and access to lessons will be posted in the teacher's Google Classroom. Some of the work will require students to work online, but not all will. The amount of time will vary based on the grade level of the students. We want our students to play, read, and go in their yard equally as much as we want them to engage in instruction. At the end of the period or block, students will sign back into Zoom for a debrief and will be able to ask any questions that they may have.

Zoom for Students

Zoom for Teachers

Zoom How-to Videos

State Testing, AP Testing, SAT and PSAT

The State announced that RICAS ELA would be postponed. No date was given. This decision may change at a later time. SAT scheduled for March 25 is postponed. New dates for SAT and PSAT have not been given yet. AP is considering at-home testing. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Progress Notes and Report Cards

Elementary and Middle School Progress Reports will be available on March 27, 2020, in Aspen. Teachers will post grades in Aspen by March 25, 2020.

We will extend the High School 3rd quarter by seven school days to April 15, 2020, to end the quarter, and report cards will be available on April 20, 2020.

Student Expectations

Our teachers are looking forward to connecting with their students. Please share that teachers are excited to be able to have the opportunity to reconnect with them on March 25!

Please remind students that these are instructional days that they must take seriously. Their teachers will be in close communication with them along the way. Students should set up a routine at home for their Distance Learning Days. A sample student checklist is available here. Teachers may provide a more customized option.

Teacher Expectations

Teachers will remain in close contact and communication with students, families, and administration following the details of our Distance Learning Plan. We know that teachers will be supporting their own families as they work with our students, and that, on occasions, adjustments may need to be made to plans. The Governor sends her thanks out to teachers and urges them to put their all into it. Teachers will give feedback, grade, give assessments, contact students daily. It is school - just offered in a different way. We will continuously monitor and assess the Distance Learning Plan and adjust at the end of two weeks if needed.

School Counselors and Counselors, Nurses, Social Workers, and Psychologists

All support staff will be available to support students and families throughout this process. They will provide office hours virtually. Also, they will reach out to students on their caseloads, students with health plans, and continue to provide the necessary supports and resources throughout these challenging times.

Special Education Services

Federal and state regulations require special education.  We will continue to provide our students with disabilities free appropriate public education during Distance Learning.

Most students will be provided with Specially Designed Instruction and Related Services through virtual instruction. A small percentage of students will require an alternative learning plan. These students, such as PK students with IEPs, will require daily parental communication for carryover and support in the home. Special Education Team members will be communicating with families regarding individual learning plans. IEP meetings will continue virtually. We are awaiting guidance on evaluations and reevaluations.

Attendance

It is the expectation that teachers and students attend daily and engage each period. At the high school and middle school, attendance for students will be recorded period by period in Aspen. For all other schools, teachers will take attendance each period or block, but only homeroom teachers will enter into Aspen. If a student does not engage on a daily and period basis, the school secretary will be contacting the home to ensure that the student is doing well, to provide necessary supports, and to provide reminders about the importance of attendance. Parents should email secretaries if students are not participating due to illness.

Teachers are also required to attend each day and period. If they are unable due to illness or have a personal day, they will notify students and leave the assignment in Classroom.

Families

Families will need to support this work at home; we will be in close communications and will provide methods for two-way dialogue. The Governor urges families to come up with a schedule. Make it clear that Distance Learning is not a vacation. Find a place for children to do their work. Provide as much structure as possible.

Technology

K-3 families, if you did not request a device and are finding that with multiple children, you need one; please email Dave Burrows Director of Technology at burrowsd@barringtonschools.org  to request a device. It is best to have a device available for each student.

Optimal devices for Distance Learning include a laptop or Chromebook with a microphone and a camera. For K-2 students, an iPad will work well, too. For work, other than longer writing assignments, iPads will work for grade 3 as well, if that is what the student is most comfortable using. While there are many types of devices available, we have not tested them all. To connect to Zoom, any mobile device will work.

If you incur any challenges, please email Dave Burrows directly, as this will help us continuously assess where we are in our DL plan.

Rhode Island Department of Health Updates

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) did not provide Barrington with any updates today.

Joint Updates from The Governor and the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH)

Governor Raimondo and Dr. Alexander-Scott of RIDOH continue to remind us of the precautions and preventative measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. At this time, Rhode Island is considered a state with community transmission. The virus spreads through groups of people, especially if someone in the group has signs of illness. We all need to follow these directions to limit the spread in RI.

Please remind your children to follow the precautions:

As such, each of us must do our parts to slow down the spread. BPS would like to emphasize the following:

  •  Restrict gatherings to under 25 people
  • Avoid non-essential human contact
  • Stay home if you are sick or are starting to feel under-the-weather
  • All students, families, and staff should avoid non-essential crowds - eating out, getting hair done, hanging out with friends, if the bus is full, wait for the next one, getting a message is not essential.
  • Families should cancel playdates
  • Teenagers and students should not meet in groups
  • Remind teenagers and students that social distancing means remaining at least 6 feet apart from individuals who do not live in your house.
  • If you traveled internationally for 14 days - stay home for 14 days and self-monitor
  • Avoid close personal contact in public
  • Avoid hugs and handshakes in public
  • Contact your healthcare provider if you have symptoms
  • If you can stay home to recover, stay home, testing is more critical for those that need to go to the hospital
  • Only go out for essential needs

Dear Barrington School Community,

I hope you are doing well.  These are unprecedented times in our history, and it is essential that we follow the protocols established by the Governor's Office and the Department of Health.  We are all experiencing these challenges together, and as a community, we need to support one another and continue to follow the protocols that will keep you and our community safe and healthy.

We will continue to keep you updated with information as it comes available.

Rhode Island Department of Health Updates

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) did not provide Barrington with any updates today.

Health and Safety Update from BPS

Community and staff members have expressed concerns regarding their exposure with the individuals who were directly in contact with the person who was confirmed positive to Coronavirus. The CDC states the risk to third-party contacts is extremely low for transmission of disease. The RIDOH reminds us to continue to practice protective measures such as proper handwashing, coughing into your elbow, and avoiding touching your face to protect yourself and prevent spreading germs.

Joint Updates from The Governor and the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH)

Distance Learning Plan Updates

The Rhode Island Department of Education and the Governor's Office Schools will provide detailed directions on the potential for extended school closures. All school districts, including Barrington, are submitting their Distance Learning Plans for approval from RIDE this week for potential implementation following this vacation week. We will provide families and teachers with specific plans and details as they become available.

K-3 families, if you did not request a device and are finding that with multiple children, you need one, please email Dave Burrows at burrowsd@barringtonschools.org for a pickup time and location.

Free and Reduced Lunch

Due to the closure of schools, free "Grab and Go" meals are available (March 16th - March 20th) for school children throughout Rhode Island. New sites will be added, so please contact us for more options.  All of these sites are operating on the same basis, which is that anyone aged 18 or under who shows up gets a free meal. There are no ID or residency requirements, but the child must be present; schools cannot give a meal to an adult on behalf of a child.

Food Sites

https://health.ri.gov/diseases/ncov2019/about/foodsites/

An additional site, Hope and Main in Warren, will be open starting tomorrow from 9-11 AM.

Also, if you are in need and do not have access to these sites, please contact gladneyn@barringtonschools.org.

School and District Offices

BPS closed School and District Offices to the public and families. Please check the main page of each school for alternate contact information. District offices can be reached by calling 401-245-5000 or by email. We will be creating digital forms that you will be able to submit via email.

Student Well-Being and Engagement

Talking about COVID-19 can be challenging. Please follow this link for some talking points.

Our counselors will be available next week for any students or families. We will provide contact information. RIDOH has set up the following 24-Hour mental health hotline for those in need 401-414-5465.

BPS is also in the process of creating a site with engaging at-home activities. In the meantime, please check out some of the following:

1.     Playworks - While we join other organizations in changing the way we work for the coming weeks, there is one other thing we are putting in place that we hope will help families whose children are at home and the teachers scrambling to provide online classes. We'll be highlighting a series of Playworks games on our social media channels in the coming weeks. These will be games that can be played at home with a small number of children or larger groups in schools that are open. Follow along using #PlayworksAtHome and #PlayAtHome. Good Evening,

We are making a concerted effort to keep you informed through our communications with the RI Department of Health.  As of today, we have not received any additional information from the RIDOH.

Consistent with the RIDOH's previous directive, unless you were in direct contact with the individual that tested positive for Coronavirus, you are not at risk. If you were in direct contact, you would have already received a letter from us that was forwarded from RIDOH and a follow-up call from the District.

Please refer to the general guidance from the RIDOH, as stated in our previous communications regarding protections you can take:

  • All students and staff who have been exposed must quarantine themselves at home, under an abundance of caution, for the next 14 days.  Students, faculty, and staff under the quarantine should not leave their homes for the duration of the 14-day quarantine.  Those affected by the quarantine should monitor themselves. If they begin to exhibit the following symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, and shortness of breath, contact your family physician and the RIDOH.
  • Parents, siblings, and other family members may leave their homes, at their discretion, but should not admit visitors for any reason. Parents, siblings, and other family members that begin to exhibit the aforementioned symptoms should also quarantine themselves for 14 days. If they start to exhibit the following symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, and shortness of breath, contact your family physician and the RIDOH.

If you have questions or concerns about Coronavirus, contact the RIDOH at 401-222-2577, 401-276-8046, and after hours at 401-276-8046. I cannot provide any detailed information at this time until directed by the RIDOH.

Please continue to practice the recommended guidelines by RIDOH and CDC:

  1. Stay home if it is not critical that you go out
  2. Stay home if you are sick
  3. Stay home from work, if allowable and work from home
  4. Wash hands regularly, at least 20 seconds throughout the day
  5. Call your doctor if you are ill, don't just go in
  6. Maintain social distancing
  7. Regularly disinfect surfaces
  8. Avoid large gatherings, which must all be canceled
  9. Follow the guidance below
  10. If you have engaged in international travel in the past 14 days, you must self-quarantine as soon as you arrive in Rhode Island
  11. Avoid handshakes and hugs
  12. Remain at a distance of 6 feet from people in public
  13. Adults over 60 must avoid going out or being around those who are ill, avoid meetings, events, or places where 10 or more older people are together
  14. Do not visit nursing homes or hospitals

Barrington Public Schools’ Administrators engaged in a conference call with Dr. Alexander-Scott and Commissioner Infante Green at 12:30 PM today. The Governor of Rhode Island issued the following:

The Governor, Rhode Island Department of Education, and Rhode Island Department of Health moved the April vacation front April 13 -- 17,  to this Monday, March 16 -- 20. The week of March 16th is now Spring Break for all schools and districts. This is to give school staff and central office time to finalize their long-distance learning plans. The Commissioner & the Health Director indicated that the decision to close schools will be made on a week to week basis.

The State may issue a directive to begin Virtual Learning across the state beginning on March 23rd. Barrington Public Schools has completed our plan and is awaiting final approval from RIDE. As such, we are prepared to institute virtual learning if necessary. Notice of school cancelation will be sent out on RI Broadcasters and Apptegy.

Until further notice, all extra-curricular activities are suspended, including Interscholastic Athletics. During the time period students are not in school students, educators, and families are reminded to engage in social distancing, avoid out of state travel, and avoid large gatherings.

Educators

Educators and staff are asked to be available for briefings and virtual conferences during the week of March 16th. We will be available to provide online professional development for any staff members who would like to engage in professional learning to prepare for virtual learning.

Educators should also use this week to prepare for virtual learning lessons to possibly begin the Week of March 23rd. If the school District is re-opened by the previously scheduled April Vacation 4/13-4/17, we will not be able to grant personal days or vacation days for administrators and teachers or vacation days for administrators.

All activities and athletics are canceled at this time.

FAMILIES

Families can email Dave Burrows, Director of Technology at burrowsd@barringtonschools.org  to schedule a time to pick up a student device if needed.

ALL

Because of our inclement weather calendar, virtual learning, if required by the State, will begin on March 25. At that time, Barrington Public Schools will implement online, virtual learning for PK-12. The protocols for virtual learning have been provided to all staff.

Educators will be in direct communication via email with their students or families in the case of K-5, to set up the daily schedule, which will mirror the school schedule. All assignments will be provided in Google Classrooms. K-3 Students received their Clever Badges for logging in on 3/13/2020. Here is a link to the directions for Clever. Virtual office hours will be provided by counselors. Nurses and Specialists will also provide case management during the virtual learning period. Please see an overview of the plan here.

We appreciate all of your support and patience during this challenging time. Closing our schools will allow us to prevent the spread of the virus and place the health of our entire learning community at the center of all of our decisions.

Please continue to engage in the following as recommended by RIDOH and CDC:

  1. Stay home if you are sick

  2. Stay home from work, if allowable and work from home

  3. Wash hands regularly, at least 20 seconds throughout the day

  4. Call your doctor if you are ill, don’t just go in

  5. Maintain social distancing

  6. Regularly disinfect surfaces

  7. Avoid large gatherings, which must all be canceled

  8. Follow the guidance below

The following message was sent out to families this afternoon

Good afternoon,

The Rhode Island Department of Education is requiring a virtual learning plan from every District in Rhode Island in the event of emergency school closures. The District is currently working on a digital learning plan that we can implement.  A key piece of information needed for this implementation is the type of access our students, especially K-5, have access to outside of school.  Please fill out the appropriate survey below so we can assess these areas.

K-3

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd6E84vTSh8puVaNAVDNHCkIHkfbm_GJq27GXM3EGfWaDiglg/viewform

Families with students grades 6-12 that do not have access to WiFi outside of school should contact David Burrows, Director of Technology at burrowsd@barringtonschools.org so we can assess our district's limitations for planning purposes.

Thank you,

 Mike Messore

Dear Families,

After consulting with the most recent guidelines provided by the State concerning best practices around preventing the spread of COVID-19, we are postponing the Barrington Middle School Art's Alive play scheduled for Saturday 3/14. Updates will continue to be shared with you on our dedicated page: https://www.barringtonschools.org/article/198359?org=barrington-schools

March 11, 2020 5:45 PM

Dr. Scott, from the Rhode Island Department of Health, led a statewide phone conference today with all Superintendents. The joint guidance from RIDOH and the Rhode Island Department of Education for PK-12 Public Schools is as follows:

  • RIDOH and RIDE do not recommend the closure of schools unless there is a widespread illness or a documented case of COVID-19 in the school. For the majority of students, school is the safest place. Students, individuals under the age of 60, and those without compromised immune or respiratory systems are not at high risk for the illness and require the safety, meals, and instruction provided by their schools.
  • RIDOH and RIDE recommend the cancellation or postponing of events that include 250 or more visitors to the schools for at least the next two weeks
  • RIDOH and RIDE recommend the cancellation or postponing of events that require the proximity of visitors to the schools for at least the next two weeks.
  • RIDOH and RIDE recommend rescheduling or canceling field trips where there are large groups of people convening or where there is limited access to hand-washing and sanitizing. RIDOH and RIDE are not issuing directives to cancel domestic field trips at this time.
  • RIDOH and RIDE recommend that in-school student events located in confined areas such as the gymnasium be limited to 250 students.
  • RIDOH and RIDE recommend that there is arm's length between people at events and gatherings.
  • RIDOH and RIDE continue to recommend the following:
  1. Frequent washing of hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, or the use of a 60% or higher sanitizer when hand washing is not possible
  2. Covering coughs and sneezes
  3. Staying home when you are sick
  4. Regular sanitizing of surfaces in schools and on busses

All school nurses have been trained on the appropriate steps to take if a concern should arise with a student or staff member in a school. RIDOH and RIDE will continue weekly, or more frequent, conference calls with school leaders throughout the state. Barrington Public Schools' Administration will continue to provide you with updates as they become available. In the event that a member of our learning community tests positive or comes in contact with COVID-19, we will work directly with the RIDOH for guidance and direction.

At this time, Barrington Public Schools is canceling all public events with more than 250 participants and smaller groups with family and community visitors in spaces that do not allow for arm's length distances for the next two weeks. We will provide additional updates if the guidance changes about events or at the end of the two-week window.

The information provided by Dr. Scott was confirmed by the Governor during a press conference this afternoon. To access the press conference, click here https://turnto10.com/news/local/ridoh-raimondo-to-provide-coronavirus-update?jwsource=em

Dear Barrington Public School's Family and Staff,

Barrington Public Schools (BPS) is closely monitoring the developments of the Coronavirus, COVID-19, through daily communications from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH).

BPS received a letter from RIDOH and the Rhode Island Department of Education updating the state of COVID-19 today. Please follow the links below

What BPS is doing:

  • BPS follows the guidance from RIDOH, CDC, and Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE)
  • BPS Custodial staff continuously disinfects all classrooms and high traffic surfaces for several weeks during this flu season with hospital grade disinfectant.
  • Requires the bus company to disinfect busses.
  • Monitors hand sanitizer dispensers.
  • Equips bathrooms with the appropriate hand-washing soap.
  • Educates students on the recommendations from RIDOH.
  • Provides opportunities for frequent handwashing.
  • Communicates with RIDOH and RIDE for the most current information and guidance at the school level.

We encourage families, staff, and students to engage in their daily routines. We urge children and adults to avoid panic in this situation. We support good, common sense approaches to this virus, similar to the practices used to avoid the flu. Science continues to evolve regarding this virus, and what we know is subject to change. The latest guidance from CDC suggests that risk of asymptomatic transmission is very low. (The main way the virus spreads is through respiratory droplets expelled by someone who is coughing.) If you do not exhibit any symptoms, there is no need to change your daily routine.

We value the health and well-being of our students, staff, and families.  Our school health professionals work throughout the year to promote healthy schools. Our school Facility Department sanitizes our schools, as we do during every flu season. The District continues to follow all recommended guidelines to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Superintendents across the State, in collaboration with State officials and the Health Department, work collaboratively to update the public of the measures that we will take if COVID-19 becomes pandemic and impacts the normal operations of local schools.

We are committed to the safety and wellness of our school community and will keep you informed, as necessary, regarding this evolving situation

February 28, 2020

Dear Barrington Public School Families and Staff,

We understand that you may have questions regarding the recent global outbreaks of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) and how it may impact our community. Barrington Public Schools is closely monitoring developments through daily communications from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH).

The CDC recently reported that the immediate risk to the general public remains low, and Rhode Island has no confirmed cases of COVID-19, at this time.  We will continue to follow the guidance and recommendations of the CDC and RIDOH.

The RI Department of Health recommends that you engage in the same types of precautions that aid in preventing the cold, flu, or norovirus, to help protect you against other respiratory viruses.

  • Practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Use Alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
  • When coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. You can also  cough or sneeze into your sleeve.
  • Throw used tissues in the trash and immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid sharing drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, dishes, towels, or other items. Wash these items thoroughly with soap and water after use.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick whenever possible.
  • Practice other good health habits:
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work, or school, especially when someone is ill.
    • Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

The risk for COVID-19 is associated with someone's travel history, not ethnicity or nationality. We all must remember that someone's race or ethnicity is not a risk factor for COVID-19, and we must continue to treat all the members of our community with respect.
